A Christmas Thought

The rays of dawn are yet elusive this Christmas eve. Through the pane creeps the chill and weaves toward the dancing flames. The flames of the candles seem to fight among themselves, only to bow before the master in the hearth. Echoes of words from ages past are carved forever in the walls, as if by some unseen hand, silently, skillfully, permanently. Slowly come the voices, anger, love and understanding. Nearly undetected, they captivate my ears. The emotion I take from them somehow warms my night. A night begun alone, now flowers me with expectation. It occurs to me then, that loneliness is merely a need for love. Even though I sit alone, I am not lonely. To slow down, to stop, in some minute ebb of time, to notice things that I have passed unwittingly. To observe these things and listen to the voices, can only warm my heart. Is it not possible to draw love into your own heart from love that exists elsewhere? Can you not help but be warmed by a love shared by another two? Can you not help but be warmed by thoughts of love you have shared in some forgotten memory? Is this not the essence of Christmas? Everyone slowing, seeing, caring, if only for a moment, is this not a miracle? The flames have slowed to a whisper now and bid me farewell, yet their presence cannot be forgotten. A warm memory forever lingers. Is it not so with you and I ?
